The typology of rivers classifies the diversity of Swiss streams in one of the 54 watercourse types.

The typology thus describes the potentially undisturbed (natural) of corresponding watercourse sections (target state). Knowledge of the target status is an essential basis for assessing the status of watercourses and a helpful guide for enhancement measures.
