Biodiversity indicators for stream monitoring

The National Surface Water Quality Monitoring (NAWA) collects data on four species groups ( diatoms, aquatic plants, macroinvertebrates and fish) in order to assess the ecological status of the streams.

The pilot project “ Trends in biodiversity in Swiss streams and rivers – pilot study with NAWA data” showed that these data are also suitable for calculating various biodiversity indicators that are also used in Swiss biodiversity monitoring (BDM).
